H.S.H. Prince Albert II at COP25 in Madrid

From the 1st until the 3rd December, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco was in Madrid to participate in COP25, the United Nations conference on climate change.

On Monday 2 December, at the high-level round table bringing together Heads of State and Government, the Prince  was able to highlight the actions undertaken by the Principality of Monaco in the context of its environmental policy:

«Like many States or large communities My country has set a clear goal of reducing our gas emissions to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. This is why the Principality has joined the Climate Ambition Alliance launched by President Pinera of Chile.»

The Sovereign also referred to Monaco’s Climate Air Energy Plan which is aiming, by 2030, for a 50% reduction in emissions, as well as the policy of complete elimination by that date of single use plastic and a ban on fuel oil heating for buildings by 2022.

"At the same time and despite the fact that our energy mix is already very low in carbon, we will develop the use of renewable energies, especially solar power, as well as that of hot and cold networks from seawater heat pumps, which are already meeting nearly 20% of our global energy requirements" stated the Sovereign Prince before reminding us that the Principality’s commitment is also reflected in the support the Prince's Government and His Foundation provides for projects in countries that are not part of Annex 1, both in terms of adaptation and mitigation, as evidenced by the support of EUR 3.75 million for the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund.

On Tuesday 3 December, Prince Albert delivered a speech at the high-level event hosted by the Chilean Presidency on the Oceans.

During these three days, His Serene Highness met with Mr Pédro Sanchez, President of the Spanish Government; Ms Carolina Schmidt, Minister of Environment of Chile and President of COP and Mr Andres Couve, Chilean Minister of Science and Innovation.

On Monday 2 December the Sovereign Prince was invited to the reception hosted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain at the Royal Palace.
