On Saturday, April 12, H.S.H. Prince Albert II attended a ceremony in memory of Josephine Baker on the 50th anniversary of her death at the Monaco cemetery.
After the American, French, and Monegasque national anthems were performed by the Prince's Carabiniers Orchestra, the Sovereign Prince laid a wreath on the grave of this exceptional artist, resistance fighter, and civil rights activist. Soprano Nathalie Nicaud also paid tribute to Josephine Baker with a moving rendition of several of her songs.
A bold and committed figure, Josephine Baker found refuge in Monaco and unwavering support from Princess Grace. It was here that she spent her final years before passing away in 1975.
Today, the Principality honors her memory and celebrates her legacy as a free and universal woman whose message of brotherhood still resonates today.
