Visit of H.S.H. Prince Albert II to Kiel

H.S.H. Prince Albert II visited Kiel on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th September 2021. This city in northern Germany is the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Welcomed by Mr Daniel Günther, President of the Federated State and by Ulf Kämpfer, the Mayor of the city, this trip was in memory and the centenary of the death of Prince Albert I (celebrated in 2022), but also of sciences with the visit to GEOMAR, one of the biggest centres in marine research, and finally of sailing with the meeting of the "Team Malizia" as part of the "Kieler Woche" (Kiel sailing week).

A little history:

From 1898 to 1914 Prince Albert I made a habit of going to Kiel to attend the regattas of the same name (eleven times in total) at the invitation of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

On the first occasion, he came to talk to the Kaiser about his project for a network of meteorological observatories for Europe in the Azores. He obtained from the Kaiser the certainty of Captain Dreyfus' innocence, at a time when France was torn apart by this espionage affair, which was negatively affecting relations between the Republic and the Reich.

The Prince of Monaco had the idea that the week of the Kiel regatta could become a time for informal discussions between the Emperor and French personalities, in order to avoid misunderstandings and one-upmanship.

The programme of the visit:

On Wednesday 8 September, GEOMAR's directors welcomed Prince Albert II and officially presented him with a latest generation underwater drone, named "Albert I". This AUV is named after his famous grandfather in homage to his missions in the Azores and the support that the scientific centre of the time had given him during his remote expeditions.

At the end of the afternoon, the Sovereign visited the city's former Yacht Club to unveil a plaque commemorating Prince Albert I's travels to Kiel and his efforts for peace between Germany and France.

In the evening, a dinner was organised by Mr Daniel Günther in honour of Prince Albert II.

On Thursday 9 September, His Serene Highness went to the marina in Kiel where the boats of the "Kieler Woche" set off from and met the members of "Team Malizia" founded by Mr Pierre Casiraghi and Mr Boris Hermann. Thanks to a virtual reality headset the Sovereign was able to view the newest boat.

The Sovereign Prince flew back to Monaco after this last visit.
