On Saturday 9 November H.S.H. Princess Charlène travelled to Italy to the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso (Abruzzo region) to officially open the "Parrozzani" primary school which had been destroyed during the earthquake of 9 November 2016 which affected this region of Italy.
The reconstruction of this school, which will soon welcome 200 students, was carried out thanks to the Italian Red Cross but also with the support of the Monegasque Red Cross and private partners.
The Princess visited this new 1,000m2 building and was accompanied by local authority figures and a large number of children from the area who attended this event.
The Monegasque and Italian Red Cross have been working closely together for more than 30 years in the field, in particular by ensuring the safety of the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco but also in supporting migrants at the Ventimiglia camp since 2015. The Monegasque Red Cross also actively supported its Italian colleagues during the Aquila earthquake in 2009 by helping rebuild a village.
On this occasion, Princess Charlène was honoured for Her commitment to the actions of the Red Cross and was awarded the gold medal of the Italian Red Cross, an honour presented by Mr Rosario Maria Gianluca Valestro, Vice-President of the Italian Red Cross.
